Here’s the “Good News” story line:
A smash Broadway show from the 1920’s about the…….1920’s! This show was as big as “Les Mis” or “Hamilton” in its day. Set on a college campus, its packed with energy, dance, comedy and the overall goofiness and carefree existence of young people coming of age between the Great War and the Great Depression. The show is filled with standards from the 1920s that your grandparents knew as well as you know the Disney repertoire. Varsity Drag is one of the best dance songs in Broadway history.
You will be asked to bring a song to sing for auditions (32 measures). A piano accompanist will be present. You will need to wear shoes and clothing appropriate to dance. Tap shoes not needed (no tap in show).
Cast (asterisks indicate significant singing skills required):
*Tom Marlowe- football star-handsome and charismatic, second tenor/baritone, good mover
*Connie Lane- braniac, sweet, but nobody’s fool, alto/soprano mix, good mover
*Babe O’Day- very outgoing and vivacious, needs strong comedic skills, dancer
*Bobby Randall- a “likable wimp,” always third string on any team, but trying his best to be big man on campus, needs strong comedic skills, dancer
*Coach Johnson- gruff, but good hearted, sings duets with Professor Kenyon
*Professor Kenyon- forthright with strong opinions about academics outweighing athletics, sings duets with Coach Johnson
*Pooch- trainer for the football team, incredibly superstitious, needs strong comic skills, high energy mover
Beef- the muscle for the football team, his IQ may not exceed his body temperature, intimidating but also funny, does not need to be a strong singer
*Pat Bingham- rich, really rich and doesn’t know how annoying that can be to those who aren’t. Needs to be able to be self centered, but still humorous and charming. Needs to be a strong singer as she has significant solos in several songs, and needs to be a good dancer.
Sylvester- the ultimate freshman, strong comedic skills
Ensemble parts (this show has several big dance numbers, so movement and singing skills are important) :
Millie, Flo, Corda, Lucy- sorority sisters with lines, must be strong singers and dancers
Additional sorority sisters (2-4) strong dancers and singers
Grubs, Windy, Slats, Lefty- football players with lines, good movers
Additional football players (?)- good movers
Ticket taker- crusty, easily annoyed and outwitted
Announcer- radio voice, may not be seen onstage as announcer, will likely double in ensemble
Ensemble will double as various students, cheerleaders, teachers on campus. Join in the fun – see you at auditions!
