Peoria Players Theatre is proud to present the community theater regional premiere of Mamma Mia!, written by Catherine Johnson. The show uses the classic music from ABBA to tell the story of a young woman, Sophie, who is engaged to get married to Sky. She wants her father to walk her down the aisle, but she is unsure of who he is. That is, until she uncovers her mother’s (Donna) old diary; it is through the diary that Sophie learns of three men from her mother’s past: Harry, Sam and Bill. Sophie and Donna live on a tiny Greek island. The day before Sophie’s wedding, Donna’s two life-long friends arrive: Tanya and Rosie. Shortly after their arrival, Donna finds out that Harry, Sam and Bill are also on the island because Sophie secretly invited them to her wedding. Sophie spends her time trying to figure out which one of the men is her father, while Donna spends her time trying to avoid all three men completely. It’s a trip down the aisle audiences won’t forget! Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, two of the original members of ABBA, were involved in the formation of the stage musical. The show has been a hit among over 60 million fans around the world. Since its debut in 1999, ticket sales have grossed $2 billion. Its popularity spawned the 2008 movie starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Christine Baranski and other well-known actors, and the sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, opens in movie theaters this summer.
Theatre manager, Nicki Haschke, says “We are thrilled to have the chance to present this much sought-after show. We have received inquiries about it since last year, so we anticipate a flurry of ticket sales. For that reason, we added two performances to the run.” Mamma Mia wraps up Peoria Players’ 99th consecutive season. Their very important centennial season kicks off later this summer. “The excitement of our 100th season is building, and Mamma Mia is just the right vehicle to launch Peoria Players into this landmark celebration.”
Told through the iconic music of ABBA, Mamma Mia! is a fun, energetic show that is sure to delight! Some of the cast includes Dedra Kaiser (Donna); Kelsey Jensen (Sophie); Carol Rapp (Tanya); Kathy McCormick (Rosie); Dave Schick (Sam); John Donlan (Harry); Roger Roemer (Bill); Deric Kimler (Sky) and many more new and familiar faces! The score features music that is a favorite of many generations. The song list includes “Super Trouper“, “Dancing Queen“, “Take a Chance on Me“, “Thank You for the Music“, “The Winner Takes It All“, “SOS,” the title track, “Mamma Mia” and so many more!
Directed by Jimmy Ulrich, choreographed by Randee Blickenstaff, and music directed by Holly Haines, this is a show you won’t want to miss! Jimmy says “This is a dream show for me to direct. I don’t know if anything will top this experience.” Costume chairmen Jill Barr and Darah Hannan have been planning the extravagant costumes for months. “We ordered the platform boots for the ladies and platform shoes for the men as soon as the show was cast. We gave them their shoes at the first rehearsal so that they could get used to walking and dancing in them. It has been funny to see them, especially the men, in their everyday clothes and silver platform shoes dancing.” The finale jumpsuits feature 4,694 Swarovski crystals and more sequins that Jill and Darah can count. With the stunning costumes, colorful sets and special lighting effects, what a spectacle this will be!
